Uganda's farmers using odk(open data kit s/w)

It's true! A few hundred "community knowledge workers" are connecting Uganda's farmers with important information, like when to plant crops and how to care for sick animals. It's all done using Android smartphones and the Open Data Kit software, created by researchers at the University of Washington.

That's just one example of the power of open-source software, and an open standard that empowers people around the world.

Jared Spurbeck is an open-source software enthusiast, who uses an Android phone and an Ubuntu laptop PC. He has been writing about technology and electronics since 2008.
